Space Heater Safety in Wheeling, IL

During Fire Prevention Week, our company wants to ensure that everyone in the Wheeling, Illinois, community understands the risks of using space heaters. We have a few tips to ensure that everyone is safe when they use this supplemental heating source.

Avoid Leaving Your Space Heater Alone

If you do use a space heater, you should stay with it at all times. If you move from room to room, then you should shut off the space heater.

Only Use a Space Heater for Supplemental Heating

It isn’t safe to run the space heater all day and night. As supplemental heating, it should only be used every once in a while and always while you are in the room. Unplug the heater when you’re not using it.

Clear a Space

A space heater needs at least 3 feet of space around it to be safe. Anything flammable should not be within a 3-foot radius of a space heater. For example, rugs and curtains are considered flammable materials and should be outside of the 3-foot radius if at all possible.

Watch Children and Pets

Even if your space heater has newer safety features, it is still important to ensure that pets and young children are not around them. Keeping them in separate areas or behind safety gates will help make sure that everyone is safe.

Pay Attention to Safety Features on New Space Heaters

If your space heater is old, you may want to consider a new one. Newer space heaters have safety features that may prevent a fire, such as a tip-over switch and auto shut off. Many newer models also have a thermostat to make sure they only heat the space to a certain temperature.
